The Juvederm Family of Dermal Fillers

The Juvederm family of dermal fillers is one of the most popular group of products used for facial rejuvenation. The three newest members, VolumaVolbella, and Vollure, provide the longest lasting results in their category.

What are dermal fillers used for?

Voluma before and afterDermal fillers are products such as JuvedermVolumaVolbellaVollureRestylaneRadiesseBelotero, and Sculptra that are used to address wrinkles on the face associated with volume loss. These include areas such as the nasolabial folds or laugh lines which go from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Sometimes the nasolabial folds continue all the way to the jawline as what are called the marionette lines. Dermal fillers such as Volbella work well to address fine lines around the mouth. At the same time, dermal fillers such as Voluma are used to restore volume in the mid-face. This allows us to restore the youthful apple of the cheek, which cannot be done even with a face lift. Volbella can be used to fill in hollowing that is commonly seen under the eyes.

What are dermal fillers made of?

Most dermal fillers available in the United States use hyaluronic acid as the active ingredient. These include JuvedermVolumaVolbellaVollureRestylane, and Belotero. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar found in the skin which binds 1,000 times its weight in water. This means that when placed in the skin, it draws water into the area to volumize the skin. This fills in wrinkles and restores volume loss in areas such as the upper cheeks, tear trough, and lips.

What are the members of the Juvederm family?

The Juvederm family of fillers is made by Allergan, the same company that makes Botox, Kybella, and Latisse. The original product was Juvederm Ultra and shortly thereafter Juvederm Ultra Plus was released, which is a slightly thicker product. In the last few years Allergan has release VolumaVolbella, and Vollure. These new products are made using a novel technology called Vycross technology.

What is Vycross technology?

Vycross technology is what is used to make the newest members of the Juvederm family, VolumaVolbella, and Vollure. The previous technology used to make Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus was Hyalacross technology. With Vycross, different sizes of hyaluronic acid are used and the amount of cross linking between the molecules is higher. This allows the products to last longer.

What is the difference between VolumaVolbella, and Vollure?

VolumaVolbella, and Vollure are use the Vycross technology. The difference is the amount of hyaluronic acid they contain and consequently what they are used for. Voluma has the highest level of hyaluronic acid, making it a thick and robust product used to restore volume in the upper cheek and lift the lower face. Volbella, on the other hand, has the lowest level of hyaluronic acid. This makes it a softer product that is used for fine lines such as those around the lips. Vollure, the newest member of the Juvederm family, contains an intermediate amount of hyaluronic acidVollure is used to fill wrinkles such as the nasolabial fold and marionette lines. It can also be used for radial cheek folds which are parallel to the nasolabial folds seen in some people when they smile. Most people enjoy the results of their VolumaVollure, and Volbella treatments for two years, 18 months, and 12 months, respectively, with optimal correction. Depending on the individual, multiple products can be combined to provide a youthful and rested appearance.
