How to Get Rid of Leg Veins

Veins on the legs are very common and usually do not look good. This affects the

confidence of many women because it prevents them from wearing shorts, skirts, or swimsuits. There are different types of leg veins. Perhaps the most common are the thin red spider veins. Others include the deeper and thicker blue veins. Some leg veins are even larger and bulge out from the skin; these typically require surgery and fortunately they are not as common.

Why We Get Leg Veins

Leg veins form for a number of reasons and there are certain things we can do to prevent them. Standing up for prolonged periods will increase the likelihood of forming these leg veins. Unfortunately many people have jobs requiring them to do so. Sitting down from time to time or changing the position of your legs will help. Wearing high heels will also increase the likelihood of forming leg veins. So if you find that you wear high heels a lot and are getting these veins, try wearing flats more to prevent the veins from getting worse and to prevent getting new ones. Sun exposure can lead to the formation of leg veins so it is important to either keep your legs covered with clothing when outdoors or apply protective sunscreen. A great sunscreen is the Elta MD UV Aero sunscreen because it sprays on the body and rubs in easily. Unfortunately genetics can be a cause of some leg veins and we cannot do anything to prevent these.

Leg Vein Treatment

Fortunately mane leg veins can be treated easily with laser leg vein treatments. At A E Skin, we use a specific laser that targets the blood in the veins. The light from the laser is absorbed by the blood, heats up the vein and destroys it. Often times you can see the veins disappear instantly like using a pencil eraser. Other times you will see the veins change in color or size. Sometimes the treatment can leave a bruise or dark spot that is temporary. But results can be outstanding. Some people need only a single treatment and other may need up to three treatments. And some veins respond better than others. For example, some people have multiple areas treated in a single session and some veins are removed after one treatment and others require more treatments. Repeat treatments are done every six to twelve weeks and it is important to understand that it may be a process so you will have to be patient to see full results. Another important fact is that people that get leg veins tend to get more of them so you may see more veins after some are treated and removed. This does not mean the treatment was unsuccessful. Rather, these are generally new veins forming, not the same veins coming back.

The treatment itself is very fast and does not require any anesthesia. Everyone's level of sensitivity is different but most people describe the sensation as a hot rubber band snapping on the skin. At A E Skin we use cold air to keep the area comfortable.

After a Leg Vein Treatment

Aftercare for a leg vein treatment is straightforward. Avoid heat, alcohol, and exercise for 24 hours after a treatment because this can bring blood to the surface of the skin and cause side effects. Also protect the area from the sun for at least a week after the treatment. No special bandages are required after a laser leg vein treatment.
