Benefits of Vycross Technology

Do you know what Vycross technology is and it’s benefits for your skin? Keep reading to learn more.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable products that are used to restore volume in your skin. The first ones available in the United States were Restylane and Juvederm. Restylane and Juvederm were originally approved to treat the nasolabial folds, the lines that go from the sides of your nose to the corner of your mouth. Sometimes these continue all the way to your jawline, and the parts that go from the corners of your mouth to your jaw line are called marionette lines. Now many more fillers are available and they are used in a lot of different areas such as the cheeks, temples, nose, lips, jawline, chin, and hands.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar that’s found in your skin. Your body makes it and breaks it down all the time, the normal life span of your body’s own hyaluronic acid is about two to three days. Hyaluronic acid works by bringing water into your skin. This allows your skin to become hydrated and form its barrier and other functions. Hyaluronic acid is also the active ingredient in the majority of dermal fillers. The hyaluronic acid in fillers is slightly different than that in your body. This keeps your body from breaking it down, allowing it to last a year or longer. The hyaluronic acid in dermal fillers is made in long chains, where one hyaluronic acid sugar is bound to another, forming a string, almost like a strand of spaghetti. Usually, these strands of spaghetti are also connected through what are called cross-links. Cross links connect one strand of hyaluronic acid spaghetti to another. The more cross linking there is in a dermal filler, the harder it is for your body to break it down. That means it will last longer.

What is Vycross technology?

Vycross is the second-generation technology for the way the Juvederm family of fillers is made. Vycross technology is used in Juvederm Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella. With Vycross technology, both long and short strands of hyaluronic acid spaghetti are used and the amount of cross-linking is increased. This has multiple benefits. First, the actual amount of hyaluronic acid needed to restore the volume in your skin is less. This means less swelling and a more natural look. Second, the dermal fillers that use Vycross technology are harder for your body to break down. This means that they’ll last even longer. Voluma is one dermal filler that uses Vycross technology and people enjoy their results for up to two years. This is longer than any other hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler available in the United States. The only real down-side to the Vycross technology is that it is harder to dissolve if you don’t like how it looks. So it may take multiple sessions to remove it. But 99% or more of our patients love their results with these products, and we rarely have to remove it.

The difference between the three fillers that use the Vycross technology (Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella) is the amount of the active ingredient (hyaluronic acid) each one contains. Voluma has the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid. This makes it perfect for enhancing bony areas and providing structural support such as in the cheeks, temples, nose, chin, and jawline. Volbella has the lowest concentration of hyaluronic acid. Volbella works best in fine lines on or around the lips, in the lips, and for superficial placement in other areas such as under your eyes. Vollure has an intermediate amount of hyaluronic acid and it’s appropriate for nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and deep placement under your eyes. The great thing about the Vycross technology is that not only do they provide natural-looking and long-lasting results, but there are multiple products so that they can be used just about anywhere you need them.
